Huawei Introduces Cars Instead of Phones: Luxeed EH3 by Chery

In a strategic move diverging from its mobile phone focus, Huawei, a well-known name in Europe for its smartphones, has expanded its reach into the automotive industry. This initiative, however, does not mark Huawei’s independent creation of a car from scratch. The company collaborated with SF Motors to develop the SF5, which was then released as the Huawei SF5 model.

Now, a fresh venture introduces a brand-new name: Luxeed. This novel brand is a joint effort between the smartphone manufacturer and Chery, a prominent Chinese automobile manufacturer. An image of their inaugural model, the EH3, has already been unveiled. The source of this image is none other than Richard Yu (Chengdong Yu), the CEO of Huawei. It’s worth noting that the brand name itself might raise some eyebrows, given that Chery already has a sub-brand called Exeed.

At first glance, the external design doesn’t appear groundbreaking, as similar car shapes have been witnessed in recent times. Hints of Model S and a touch of Taycan can be discerned, yet the overall impression leans closest to a collaborative development between Sony and Honda.

Luxeed EH3 – Huawei car

Underpinning the Luxeed EH3 is Chery’s E0X platform, with Huawei taking the reins in developing advanced driver-assistance features. The Huawei ADS 2.0 system encompasses an impressive array of technology, including 11 cameras, LiDAR sensors, and an abundance of radar systems. This setup is said to enable the Huawei ADS 2.0 to facilitate a maximum range of 200 kilometers without requiring driver intervention.

Details about the powertrain remain undisclosed. However, given that the Exeed Sterra ES also utilizes the Chery platform, the technical specifications are likely to bear similarities. Boasting a 700-kilometer range, the EH3 will feature a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration and utilize CATL batteries, along with supporting 800-volt charging.

Huawei’s prowess extends to the infotainment system as well, with the HarmonyOS 4 integrating seamlessly with the brand’s other devices. The onboard system derives its power from the familiar Qualcomm chipset, lending it the capability to run games with ease. Additionally, a unique feature allows the integration of a drone, which can automatically track the car and relay images to internal displays.

Although only one image of the Luxeed EH3 has surfaced, and there are still some undisclosed details, the price and release date have been confirmed. Starting price just under $28,000. The initial units are projected to arrive by the third quarter of 2023.
