There has been some reshuffling on the list showcasing the world’s worst passwords for the year 2022. However, this doesn’t mean that we are opting for significantly more complex, and thus, less vulnerable options.
It has become a tradition for NordPass to compile a list of the weakest passwords used throughout the year as we approach the end of each year. This year is no exception.
The experts compiling the summary have concluded that users tend to employ the weakest passwords on streaming service platforms, while they opt for stronger ones when it comes to financial services. In a way, this is good news as the latter implies a certain level of awareness.
Looking at global data, it can be stated that out of the 10 worst passwords, seven consist only of numbers. Leading this list is ‘123456,’ which means it has jumped from the second spot last year to the first, dethroning ‘password.’ The latter has, in fact, significantly dropped and is now considered only the seventh most commonly used bad password in 2023.
The second spot is occupied by ‘admin,’ while ‘12345678’ takes the third position. The TOP 10 list is structured as follows:
- 123456
- admin
- 12345678
- 123456789
- 1234
- 12345
- password
- 123
- Aa123456
- 1234567890
According to NordPass, these passwords can be cracked in less than 1 second. Interestingly, the password ‘UNKNOWN,’ which holds the 11th position on the list, stands out in this regard, requiring 17 minutes to be deciphered.
