Bends Like a Snake: Motorola’s New Phone Concept

In today’s world, most people carry their phones with them everywhere, but would they be willing to wear it on their wrist? According to Motorola, there might be a demand for it, as demonstrated by their latest concept phone that wraps around the user’s wrist or arm, resembling a snake.

Motorola unveiled this innovative device at the Lenovo Tech World event held this week, and it quickly took the internet by storm. The company describes the phone as an “adaptive display concept” that can be bent and shaped into various forms depending on the users’ needs.

When flat, the phone features a 6.9-inch screen providing a full Android experience. When folded into a standalone position, it runs a more compact version of Android on a 4.6-inch display. Additionally, it can be worn on the wrist like a (very large) watch or bracelet.

Is This the Future?

Whether this concept will become the future of smartphones remains a significant question mark. The device looks intriguing, but it raises several concerns. One major issue is the comfort of wearing a phone – current standards require mobile phones to weigh at least 200 grams, which could strain the wrist over time.

ALSO QUESTIONABLE IS HOW MANY FOLDS THE DEVICE CAN HANDLE, AS MOTOROLA DID NOT ADDRESS THIS DURING THE PRESENTATION.

Moreover, it’s unclear how a protective case could be fitted onto the device to ensure adequate protection – questions that a concept phone cannot answer. Interestingly, Lenovo, Motorola’s parent company, showcased a similar concept phone that wrapped around the wrist back in 2016. In the same year, a Chinese startup called Moxi Group claimed to be working on a phone that could completely encircle the wrist like a bracelet, but neither of these concepts made it to the market.

Other Manufacturers are Also Innovating

As reported earlier by the Index, Huawei is working on a unique foldable phone design. The phone’s asymmetrical layout allows the camera to extend directly above the left side display when unfolded – serving as a front-facing selfie camera. When folded, the camera faces backward, enabling everyday photography.

On the contrary, Oukitel’s latest release sticks to the conventional phone appearance but with extraordinary durability. The device boasts IP68 dust and water resistance, along with IP69K and MIL-STD-810H military certifications. In addition, it features a massive 11,000mAh battery, nearly two and a half times larger than the one found in the iPhone 15 Pro Max, ensuring up to three days of usage.

The good news is that the latter is almost certain to hit the market. However, the fate of Huawei and Motorola’s devices remains uncertain, as there is no concrete information about their release dates yet.
