AMD Focuses on Automotive Industry Servicing

AMD is making significant strides in catering to the automotive industry, and they didn’t wait for CES to make their announcement. The company has already revealed its strong focus on this sector, leveraging its position gained through the acquisition of Xilinx and further reinforcing it with the combination of Ryzen and Versal.

Among the noteworthy additions is the Ryzen Embedded V2000A series, a system specifically tailored for automotive needs, endorsed by AEC-Q100 certification. Built on the 7nm node, it’s a rework of the Renoir chip with up to six Zen 2 cores, a Vega architecture-based Radeon IGP supporting up to 7 multiprocessors, and the capability to handle four 4K displays. It also includes two gigabit Ethernet controllers. AMD promises ten years of planned availability, meeting the expectations in the targeted market by simultaneously serving the driver interface and in-car entertainment system.

However, more crucial than Ryzen is the XA Versal AI Edge series. Recognizing the growing presence of AI in the market, AMD introduced its Ryzen AI solution. Still, automotive requirements are diverse, making it challenging to cover all aspects with a single development. To address this, AMD separated its architecture. The Ryzen Embedded V2000A series caters to most driver interface needs, while the XA Versal AI Edge series offers a unique approach.

AMD XA Versal AI Edge series

The XA Versal AI Edge series, produced on the 7nm node, responds to specific requirements with distinct designs. AMD considers these developments as ACAP solutions, standing for the adaptive compute acceleration platform, featuring various components for general heterogeneous acceleration. With two ARM Cortex-A72 and two ARM Cortex-R5F cores, these chips can be complemented by DSP and AI processors based on the design, alongside FPGAs of varying sizes.

The entire product range boasts a combined performance of 5 to 171 TOPS in 8-bit integer format. The Versal series excels in extremely low response times, crucial in the automotive industry where quick decisions are vital for saving lives.

The XA Versal AI Edge series will be introduced in two phases. The initial release, XAVE1752, is expected to be available to partners early in the year, laying the groundwork for the broader XAVE2000 series anticipated later in the year, offering scalable and tailored solutions for specific areas.

AMD reports positive responses from key players like BlackBerry/QNX, Cognata, Ecarx, Luxoft, Tesla, and Xylon, indicating their acknowledgment of the new platform.
