YouTube is experimenting with yet another feature designed to keep users glued to their screens. After rolling out a series of design updates and new features in its mobile app, the platform is now testing a floating button called “Play Something.”
As the name suggests, the button has a straightforward function: with a single tap, YouTube will play a random video for the user. It’s similar in concept to Google’s “I’m Feeling Lucky” button, which directs users to a random search result.
According to reports by 9to5Google, the playback begins in portrait mode within the YouTube app and, for now, is limited to a single video. Automatic playback isn’t enabled in this mode, making it a one-time suggestion rather than a continuous stream of random videos.
While Google hasn’t provided detailed information about the feature, it’s clear that this innovation is another way to keep users engaged on the platform. By eliminating the need to decide what to watch next, YouTube makes it even easier for viewers to stay immersed in content.
It’s worth noting, however, that this feature is currently being tested, and there’s no guarantee that it will become a permanent addition to the app. Whether it sticks or not, it’s another example of YouTube exploring new ways to enhance user engagement.
